Jeep CJ CJ-5 and CJ-7
1976–1986 · CJ · suv
The CJ-5 and the longer-wheelbase CJ-7 are the AMC-era civilian Jeeps that came directly before the YJ Wrangler. The CJ-5 ran in this form through 1983, the CJ-7 through 1986. Body-on-frame, leaf springs front and rear, Dana 30 front and AMC 20 or Dana 44 rear depending on year and trim. Engines ranged from the AMC 232 and 258 inline-sixes to the AMC 304 V8 (1976-1981) and the 2.5L Iron Duke four on later trims. Considered the last truly old-school Jeep before fuel injection and modern emissions arrived.
Watch out: Frame rust on the rear shackle mounts, the front crossmember, and the body mounts. The AMC 20 rear axle is known for two-piece axle shaft failures where the shaft separates from the hub flange; many owners convert to one-piece shafts. Carbureted six-cylinders also benefit from a full ignition refresh on any truck that has sat.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
