Infiniti FX 1st Gen (S50)

First-generation Infiniti FX, sold in the US 2003-2008 on the S50 chassis built on Nissan's FM (Front-Midship) platform shared with the G35 and 350Z. FX35 used the 3.5L VQ35DE V6 (around 280 hp); FX45 used the 4.5L VK45DE V8 (around 315 hp). 5-speed automatic. RWD or AWD. Distinctive coupe-shaped crossover styling and aggressive proportions. Predecessor to the S51 FX / QX70.

Watch out: VQ35DE oil consumption is well-documented and shows up at higher mileage on these. Owner reports of timing chain rattle on cold start (chain stretch and worn guides) become common past 100k miles on both V6 and V8 cars. Sunroof drain clogs causing carpet and trunk-floor stains are widely reported. Front-end suspension wear (control arm bushings, sway bar end links) shows up earlier than expected because of the sport tuning. Pre-purchase: check oil level (low is a tell), listen for chain rattle on cold start, inspect under carpets for water staining, and verify the trunk struts still hold up the heavy rear glass.
