Honda Insight 1st Generation
1999–2006 · ZE1 · hatchback
The original Insight was Honda's first hybrid for the US market and the first hybrid sold in North America, beating the Prius to dealerships by months. Two-seat liftback body with aluminum construction, drag coefficient of 0.25, and the IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) mild-hybrid system paired with a 1.0L I3. Manual version rated 61 mpg highway. Niche from day one; under 18,000 sold across the run.
Watch out: IMA hybrid battery degradation is the universal failure mode on these cars. Original NiMH packs do not last 20+ years; aftermarket replacement and reconditioning options are mature, with several specialist shops serving the community. Without a working IMA, the car still runs but loses regenerative braking and assist.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
