GMC Sonoma 1st/2nd Generation (S-15)
1991–2004 · GMT400 (compact) · truck
The Sonoma replaced the S-15 nameplate for 1991 as GMC's compact pickup, the mechanical twin of the Chevrolet S-10. The first generation Sonoma (1991-1993) carried over the original S-series platform; the second generation (1994-2004) used the redesigned compact GMT chassis shared with the second-gen S-10. Engines ran from the 2.2L LN2 four to the 4.3L Vortec V6 (the volume engine), with the Syclone-derived high-output 4.3L offered in early Sonoma GT trim (1992 only). Regular cab, extended cab, and a late-cycle Crew Cab. Sonoma production ended in 2004 alongside the S-10; replaced by the GMC Canyon for 2005.
Watch out: Frame rust on rear cab corners and bed-mount areas is the dominant long-term issue. Owner reports of fuel-pump failures, intake manifold gasket leaks on the 4.3L Vortec, and 4L60E transmission wear are well-documented.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
