Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor P71 (EN114, 2nd Generation)
1998–2011 · P71 · sedan
Police-spec second-gen Crown Vic on the Ford Panther platform — body-on-frame, RWD, 4.6L 2-valve SOHC Modular V8 (200-235hp depending on year). 4R70W / 4R75W 4-speed automatic. Heavy-duty cooling, alternator, brakes, suspension, and certified speedometer. Sold to police fleets through 2011 model year; civilian Crown Vic ended 2008. The last big American body-on-frame RWD sedan, the favorite cheap RWD enthusiast platform, and a known parts-cheap restoration candidate.
Watch out: 4.6L 2-valve Modular intake-manifold cracking at the front coolant crossover is the classic Crown Vic engine failure (1996-2001 plastic-composite intakes especially). Ford issued an updated aluminum-crossover composite intake under settlement; many P71s have already been done. Confirm before buying. The 4R70W transmission is otherwise extremely durable; rear ends and 8.8 axles are bulletproof. Watch for frame rust on rust-belt fleet trucks.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
