S63B44T0 (later T1) 4.4L twin-turbo V8 — 560 hp at launch, 575 in Competition trim, 600 in the 30 Jahre edition. 7-speed M-DCT or, controversially, a 6-speed manual offered only in the US. The chassis is heavy but the bandwidth (commuter to track-day) is enormous.

Watch out: S63 timing chain guides on early cars — BMW redesigned them mid-production. Rod bearings on the S63 are not the S85's nightmare but inspection in the 70-90k window is wise. Carbon buildup on intake valves from direct injection — walnut blast around 60k.
