BMW M5 E60 (4th Generation)
2005–2010 · E60 · sedan
The S85 5.0L V10 made 500 hp at 7,750 rpm and screamed to 8,250. Borrowed F1 architecture. The 7-speed SMG single-clutch gearbox is jerky and divisive, but the manual-conversion crowd is alive and well. The E61 wagon variant exists and was never sold in the US.
Watch out: S85 V10 rod bearings — the defining failure. Replacement every 60-80k miles is preventive maintenance, not optional. Throttle actuators (eight of them) and the SMG pump are the other big spenders. Buy from someone who's done the bearings.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
