BMW M3 E46 (3rd Generation M3)

2001–2006 · E46 · coupe

The E46 M3 was sold in the US from 2001 through 2006 in coupe and convertible bodies. It uses the S54B32 inline-six (3.2L, individual throttle bodies, double-VANOS) producing 333 hp in US trim. The SMG II single-clutch automated manual was offered alongside the 6-speed manual.

Watch out: Rear subframe cracking around the differential mounts is the headline E46 M3 issue and is the subject of a long-running BMW limited warranty extension. S54 rod-bearing wear is the other major concern; preventive replacement at higher mileage is a widely discussed precaution among owners. VANOS rattle and cooling-system age are also routine.
