BMW M3 E36 (2nd Generation M3)
1995–1999 · E36 · coupe
The E36 M3 was sold in the US from 1995 through 1999 in coupe, sedan and convertible bodies. The US-market car used the S52B32 inline-six (3.2L, single-VANOS). The European M3 received the S50B32, a more highly stressed unit with individual throttle bodies and higher output. Both share the E36 chassis with multi-link rear suspension.
Watch out: Cooling system failures are the dominant issue. Owner reports of plastic radiator end-tank, expansion tank, water pump impeller and thermostat housing failures are routine across S52 and S50 cars. Rear shock-tower reinforcement is a common preventive upgrade.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
