BMW M3 E30 (1st Generation M3)

19861991 · E30 · coupe

The E30 M3 is the first-generation M3, built from 1986 to 1991 (US model years 1988-1991). It used the S14 four-cylinder, a high-revving 2.3L unit derived from the M10 block with a four-valve head developed for Group A homologation. It was sold in the US only as a two-door coupe.

Watch out: S14 valve adjustment is a periodic maintenance requirement (mechanical bucket adjusters, not hydraulic). Rust on box-flares, fender lips and shock towers, and aging cooling-system components are routine concerns given the platform's age. Owner reports of high parts cost for S14-specific components are common.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
