The Chris Bangle-era 5 Series. Polarizing flame-surface design, first-gen iDrive, and the chassis for the screaming V10 E60 M5. N52 inline-six replaced the M54 mid-cycle; N62 V8 in the 545i/550i is the cooling-system landmine.

Watch out: N62 V8 (545i/550i) coolant transfer pipe is engine-out to replace; valve stem seals fail and smoke on cold start. The V10 S85 in the M5 has its own rod-bearing horror story.
