BMW 3 Series E46 (4th Generation)

1999–2006 · E46 · sedan

The E46 is the fourth-generation BMW 3 Series, sold in the US from 1999 through 2006 in sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon and hatchback (compact) forms. The M52TU and M54 inline-sixes powered most trims; the M3 used the high-revving S54B32. The E46 kept hydraulic-assist steering throughout its run.

Watch out: Rear subframe cracking around the differential mounts is the headline E46 issue, especially on M3 and any car driven hard. M54 cooling system failures (expansion tank, water pump, thermostat housing) are routine maintenance items. VANOS rattle on M54 and S54 is a well-documented issue.
