BMW 3 Series E36 (3rd Generation)

19921999 · E36 · sedan

The E36 is the third-generation BMW 3 Series, sold in the US from 1992 through 1999. It introduced the Z-axle multi-link rear suspension and used M42/M44 fours and M50/M52 inline-sixes. The US E36 M3 used the S52 inline-six rather than the European S50B32.

Watch out: Cooling system age is the standout E36 issue. Owner reports of plastic radiator end-tank failures, expansion tank cracking, water pump impeller failure and thermostat housing leaks are routine. Interior trim degradation (sticky window switches, headliner sag, cracking dashboards) is also widely documented.

Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
