BMW 3 Series E30 (2nd Generation)
1984–1991 · E30 · sedan
The E30 is the second-generation BMW 3 Series, sold in the US from model year 1984 through 1991. Available as a sedan, coupe, convertible and Touring (wagon, not US), with M10 and M20 inline fours and sixes powering most trims. The E30 is the basis for the original M3, which used the S14 four-cylinder.
Watch out: Rust around rear shock towers, trunk floor and rocker panels is the dominant E30 issue today. Owner reports of cooling-system age (radiator end-tanks, plastic expansion tank, water pump) are common given the platform's age.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
