Audi R8 Type 42 (1st Generation)

First-gen R8 (Type 42). Mid-engined, aluminum spaceframe, side-blade styling. 4.2L FSI V8 (BYH, 420 hp) at launch — the V8 R8 6-speed manual is the cult-classic configuration. 5.2L FSI V10 (BUJ, 525-552 hp) joined 2009. GT versions (V10 GT, 560 hp, 333 units) thinned the herd further. Shared chassis with the original Lamborghini Gallardo.

Watch out: V8 / V10 FSI timing chain tensioners — engine-out service if they fail. Carbon buildup on intake valves (FSI direct injection without port injection). Magnetic ride dampers leak. R tronic single-clutch automatic on early cars is jerky and the manual is much more desirable. Clutch life is short with hard launches.
