Audi A4 B5 (1st Generation)
1996–2001 · B5 · sedan
The B5 is the first-generation Audi A4, replacing the Audi 80 / 90 in the US in the 1996 model year. Body styles include sedan and Avant wagon. Engines include the AEB / AWM 1.8T turbocharged four (US 150 hp) and the AHA / ATQ 2.8 V6 (later 30-valve), with quattro all-wheel-drive optional and standard on the V6.
Watch out: 1.8T oil sludge from extended oil change intervals on early non-synthetic regimens is the well-documented headline issue and was the subject of an Audi/VW class settlement that extended warranty for affected cars. Owner reports of timing belt service criticality (interference engines), control arm wear on the front suspension and Pentosin power steering / hydraulic system leaks are routine.
Full clubhouse — owner Garage Lineage, common problems, year-by-year notes, and product picks — is on the build list.
