TL;DR Averaged-response, manual-ranging meter — reads accurately on DC battery and fuse circuits, but will underread 10–15% on PWM-controlled automotive loads, and requires manual range selection for every measurement. ETL Listed by Intertek (certificate #5000573) at CAT III 600V — independently certified to UL 61010-1 and CSA C22.2 standards, making the safety rating legitimate rather than self-declared. Basic feature set covers the essentials; no backlight limits utility in dim engine bays.
What it is and how it performs
The Klein Tools MM300 is an entry-level manual-ranging digital multimeter carrying a CAT III 600V rating independently certified by ETL (Intertek certificate #5000573) to UL 61010-1 and CSA C22.2 standards — the same certification as the MM400, confirmed from the back-panel label. It is averaged-response (not True-RMS), meaning it delivers accurate readings on clean DC and standard sine-wave AC but underreads 10–15% on PWM signals found in modern motor controls and LED lighting drivers. The feature set covers AC/DC voltage up to 600V, AC/DC current up to 10A, resistance to 2 MΩ, continuity with audible beep, diode test, and battery test. No backlight, no auto-ranging, no capacitance or temperature. Community reception is strong at 4.7 stars across 1,614 Amazon ratings, with multiple reviewers confirming reliable performance after two-plus years of regular use.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
A home mechanic or DIYer who primarily checks battery voltage, tests fuses and relays, and does basic 12V continuity work will find the MM300 accurate and properly certified for those tasks. The ETL Listed CAT III 600V rating is real — safe to probe household AC when needed. Skip it if you work in dim engine bays without a separate light source (no backlight), probe modern vehicles with PWM-heavy systems where an averaged-response meter gives wrong readings, or want to avoid manually selecting ranges for every test. The Klein Tools MM400 adds auto-ranging, a backlight, capacitance, frequency, and temperature at a modest step-up, and is the more capable choice if you work diagnostics regularly.
Safety and environmental impact
The MM300 carries an ETL Listed mark (Intertek certificate #5000573), certifying conformance to UL Std 61010-1, 61010-2-030, and 61010-2-033, and certification to CSA Std C22.2 #61010-1, 61010-2-030, and 61010-2-038 — ETL is an Intertek NRTL mark equivalent to UL Listing for independent laboratory accreditation purposes. No active CPSC recall is on file. Input protection specifics (HIC fuse ratings, MOV presence) are not independently documented for the MM300 — the ETL certification confirms the protection was tested to UL 61010-1 standards, but no teardown documentation of component-level details is available. Powered by a standard 9V alkaline battery (included); dispose via Call2Recycle or a participating retailer. The ABS housing is standard e-waste at end of life.

A good starter meter for any budding maker or DIYer that won't break the bank.
This is my review of the following items:Klein Tools model MM300 digital multimeterPLEASE NOTE: I am NOT Gough Lui or Dave Jones at EEVBlog. Therefore, I do not have access to thousands of dollars of expensive test gear to fully validate the usability or reliability of these products. This review is from the viewpoint of the average buyer/user of above listed products. It is not an exhaustive test and there will be some information provided that's still preliminary due to insufficient testing time alloted. This will be carefully noted in each item's review and preliminary information will be updated as time allows.GENERAL REVIEW -This multimeter is quite the respectable lot. It is VERY sturdily built and passes the "twist test" with gusto. The leads are very flexible and the connectors plug into the meter very snugly and won't fall out easily. The tips of the probes are sharp, but not so sharp that they'd go right through you easily. Also, the manual range switch is very stout and tight, with a very firm click that's reassuring to the touch. If there are any flaws with this meter, it would probably be the very long delay that you wait for the buzzer to sound when touching the probes together in continuity mode. I've seen meters reviewed by the likes of EEVBlog and The Defpom that are faster acting than this one, but that may be due to things outside my control including dirty probes. However, it registers voltage and resistance very quickly and the 1.5-9 volt battery test is useful. I am confident that this meter will last a long time with the proper care. The only other issue I can find, aside from the tardy response time in continuity mode, is Klein Tools' choice to use AAA cells instead of AA cells to power this meter, but I suppose that's a case of "You get what you pay for". I am not able to test it, but I'm certain this meter will survive 600 volts without issue. How many cheap sub-$20 Chinese meters do you know that can do that?CLOSING THOUGHTS -To summarize, the Klein Tools MM300 is a competent and very well-built meter that also accomplishes this without draining your wallet. It does have its limitations like a slow response to continuity checks and limited battery life owing to its use of AAA cells instead of AA cells. But overall, I'd recommend this meter for the individual who is just starting out in his/her first electronics project or the intrepid do-it-yourself home handyman who just needs a basic no-frills multimeter that's also reasonably inexpensive, very robust and abides totally to safety codes and regulations and won't crap out after a year or two of use.
