From the manufacturer’s Safety Data Sheet, Section 8
“H315 (skin irritation Cat 2) and H317 (skin sensitizer Cat 1) both confirmed in SDS §2. H317 source is Butyl Benzyl Phthalate in the DC-CC clear coat at 4.9% — repeated skin contact can cause sensitization. Nitrile gloves prevent both irritation and sensitization pathways.”

CarCareTruth's Analysis
Last reviewed May 16, 2026
TL;DR This solvent-based touch-up pen fills small chips adequately and delivers a result that is acceptable from a few feet away, but tip overflow is the dominant community complaint — a toothpick-and-cap approach gives better control than pressing directly. The solvent content is significant and the pen carries a California Prop 65 warning; use outdoors or with the garage door open.
What it is and how it performs
The Scratch Fix All-in-1 delivers a two-coat repair — base coat and clear coat — from a single pen with an abrasive prep tip built into the end cap. That's a meaningful convenience advantage over pen systems that require a separate clear coat step. The practical limit is the tip control: Amazon reviews and forum threads consistently document a tendency to flood small chips before the user can lift off, leaving a raised bead that needs wet-sanding to flatten. The workaround — dispense a small amount into the end cap and use a toothpick to place paint precisely — is well-documented, but it removes the convenience of the pen tip. After cure and a light wet-sand with 2000-grit plus polish, the result blends acceptably at normal viewing distance. Universal Black is a fixed color formulation; it will match most true blacks closely, but metallic or tinted blacks (like certain German and Japanese OEM codes) will show a slight mismatch in raking light.
Who should buy this — and who should skip it
Best fit for daily drivers with small stone chips (3mm or less) on a flat or satin black paint code where occasional close-range visibility is acceptable. The all-in-one clear coat inclusion is a genuine plus over stripped-down pen products. Skip this if the chip has reached bare metal — there is no primer in the kit and rust will start within weeks without it. Also skip it if close-range invisibility is the goal; the tip control issues and raised-edge tendency mean this is a distraction-reducer at 5 feet, not a factory-finish restorer.
Safety and environmental impact
The SDS signal word is DANGER — driven by health H-codes: toluene at 27.8% in the base coat (37.0% in the clear coat) is a Category 1A carcinogen and a listed California Prop 65 chemical for developmental toxicity. Butyl Benzyl Phthalate in the clear coat adds a skin-sensitization hazard (H317) and a reproductive toxicity classification (H360D, Category 1B). The pen is not an aerosol, but opening it in a closed garage still produces significant organic-vapor concentration from the solvent-heavy formula. The GHS classification indicates gloves, safety glasses, and ventilation for the chemistry involved — outdoors or with a garage door fully open materially reduces the inhalation exposure. VOC is estimated at 450–550 g/L across both components; the product is not CARB-compliant. The California Prop 65 warning covers both toluene and the reproductive-toxin chemistry in the clear coat.
Frequently asked questions
Does this touch-up pen actually match universal black vehicles?▾
Universal Black (ASF0100) is a fixed black — it does not need an OEM paint code and is formulated to approximate a generic black across all makes. For most vehicles with a true black (not dark grey, charcoal, or dark blue), the color match is close enough that the repair blends from normal viewing distance. If your vehicle's paint is a tinted or metallic black (codes like BMW Jet Black, Toyota Black Sand Pearl), a code-specific product will be more accurate — the universal formula won't capture the metallic flake or tinted-base difference.
Why does the tip sometimes deliver too much paint at once?▾
The pen tip is a felt-tip delivery system designed to load paint by pressing down — but the loading is not graduated, so an initial press often delivers a larger bead than needed for small chips. The community workaround is to dispense a small amount into the end cap first, then dip a fine toothpick into that pooled paint rather than pressing the tip directly into the chip. This gives substantially better volume control for chips under 2mm.
Does this work on bare-metal chips?▾
No. The Scratch Fix All-in-1 does not include an automotive primer. If the chip has penetrated through the clear coat, base coat, and primer down to bare metal, rust will begin within weeks in humid environments without a primer base coat. Use a dedicated automotive primer first (allow it to fully cure), then apply the Scratch Fix pen over the primed surface. This kit is designed for chips where the primer layer is still intact.
Why does this product have a California Prop 65 warning?▾
Toluene — the primary solvent in both the base coat (27.8%) and clear coat (37.0%) — is listed under California Proposition 65 as a chemical known to cause reproductive harm (developmental toxicity). Butyl Benzyl Phthalate in the clear coat is also associated with reproductive toxicity. Both SDS documents (base coat and clear coat) include explicit Prop 65 warnings in Section 15.
Can I use this on a car with factory clear coat?▾
Yes — the pen delivers an all-in-one base coat and clear coat in sequence from the same pen housing. The base coat fills the chip color; the clear coat provides the UV protection and gloss layer that integrates with the surrounding factory clear. For a cleaner edge, wet-sand the cured repair with 2000-grit and polish the area lightly after full cure (typically 24–48 hours).
